There’s a scene in the Bond film Skyfall that’s lived rent-free in my head since this whole AI explosion kicked off.

Bear with me — it’s worth the setup.

Bond meets the new Q for the first time. They're sitting in London's National Gallery, in front of Turner's painting of an old warship being towed away to the scrapyard.

Q is young, sharp, and confident. He tells Bond he can do more damage on his laptop in his pyjamas before his morning's first cup of tea than Bond can do in a year in the field.

Bond's response? "So why do you need me?"

Q's answer: "Every now and then, a trigger has to be pulled."

Bond doesn't miss a beat: "Or not pulled. It's hard to know which in your pyjamas."

That's the AI conversation nobody's having.


🤝 YOU NEED BOTH Q AND BOND

This isn't an anti-AI newsletter. Far from it.

AI is genuinely extraordinary — it's your Q, sitting behind the screen, processing at a speed and with capabilities you could only ever dream of.

But Q doesn't work alone. Bond doesn't work alone. The magic is the partnership.

The truth is, knowing when not to deploy AI is becoming just as critical as knowing how to use it. And many businesses are getting this wrong in three predictable ways.

📱 SOCIAL MEDIA: THE GENERIC CONTENT TRAP

You've seen it. We've all seen it. Those LinkedIn posts that read like they were assembled in a factory. The Instagram captions with all the right keywords and none of the personality.

People can spot generic AI content a mile off now. And they scroll straight past it.

Your brand voice — the thing that makes your business sound like your business — gets flattened when AI runs the show 100%. Use AI to draft, to brainstorm, to batch. But the final voice? That’s you. That’s Bond pulling the trigger on what actually gets posted.

👤 HIRING: YOUR NEXT KEY PERSON

AI can sift CVs, rank candidates, even score personality assessments. Brilliant for shortlisting.

But are you really going to hire your next key appointment based solely on AI's judgment of their character?

The person who'll sit across from your customers, represent your values, handle the crisis you haven't imagined yet?

Here’s the catch: AI reads patterns. It doesn’t read people. That gut feeling when someone leans forward in an interview and you just know they get it? That’s judgment. Don’t outsource it.

💻CONTEXT WINDOWS: KNOW YOUR LIMITS

The longer your chat with an AI runs, the fuzzier it gets.

The output gets vaguer, less accurate, earlier instructions get deprioritised and it suffers from 'recency bias'. Most businesses never notice or if you're like me on occasion start wasting time arguing with 'a machine' for forgetting key details and making mistakes!

But there's a cost problem too. AI usage is billed by the token — and a bloated conversation full of back-and-forth history costs significantly more to run than a clean, focused one.

As AI gets more expensive, knowing when to reset isn't just good practice, it's good business.

More context doesn't mean better results. You have a licence to think — use it. Learn when to clear the deck, start fresh, and give the AI something sharp to work with rather than something sprawling.
